Ireland secure second crucial win
March 20th 2013 by Cricket Ireland |
Ireland will be delighted with a job done well and the crucial four points from four taken away from their trip to the Emirates. They now stand six points clear at the top of the ICC World Cricket League Championship table.
A real captain’s innings of 77 from Irish skipper William Porterfield and solid contributions from the rest of Ireland’s top order saw Ireland chase the UAE’s total of 196 comfortably in the end to win by six wickets. Ireland’s efforts put them 6 points clear at the top of the ICC World Cricket League Championship table and possibly just one win away from securing their place at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Earlier in the day, the UAE fought back to post 196 All out in 49.4 overs in the second ICC World Cricket League Match in Sharjah. Ireland were rampant at first inspired by Trent Johnston who bowled a superb 9 over spell in unhelpful conditions for seamers to claim 4 for 25. This left the UAE in deep trouble at 80 for 5 with dangermen Khan and Patil both falling for 30.
The UAE though learnt their lessons from Monday’s match and built a partnership slowly, Anwar and Mustafa took twenty overs to put on 60 runs to get the UAE back into the match. The powerplay brought action though as it often does with runs and wickets coming and it took an innings of 34 to bring including 6 late boundaries to bring the UAE up to their finishing total of 196.
Alex Cusack was in the wickets again alongside John Mooney as they took 2 for 40 and 2 for 46 respectively whilst spin twins Dockrell and Stirling ended with a wicket apiece.
