Ireland’s Handyman relishes Pakistan challenge

Local Clontarf Cricket club man and Ireland International Alex Cusack was delighted to hear Cricket Ireland’s upcoming RSA Insurance ODI Series against Pakistan will be played in his home ground.

The all-rounder said, “It’s a great boost not just for the club, but for us as a team as well. We tend to play well in Clontarf and have a really strong record there. Cusack is currently the leading wicket taker in the ICC World Cricket League Championship and he clearly loves bowling at Clontarf, as he demonstrated last summer when he tore through Afghanistan’s line up with 3 for 17 from 8 overs.

Something of a jack-of-all-trades, Cusack is seen as Ireland’s handyman. He bats in the middle order, bowls medium pace and is one of the team’s top fielders. He takes to the role with ease, probably because he trained as a carpenter before Ireland gave him the call.

“There’s no doubting Pakistan will be a tough opponent - we saw how strong they are the last time they came to Ireland,” Cusack added. “They have some international superstars like Saeed Ajmal and Younis Khan who will provide a really stern test for us but hopefully we can use the home conditions to our advantage and put the pressure on Pakistan and press for a couple of wins.

“I think the games will be really attractive to the Irish public both south and north, with two great days of cricket assured at Clontarf and I hope we can get a really good turn out to support all the boys.”

The Castle Road venue will host both fixtures which will take place on Thursday May 23 and Sunday May 26 with 10:45am starts for both matches. Cricket Ireland have put together some great value ticket packages and they’re sure to help fill the Clontarf ground to capacity for a carnival of cricket at the end of May.
