Dragons beat Typhoons to Keep Title Hopes Alive

Skipper Mary Waldron was in fine form as she led her Dragons team to yet another victory in the Super 3’s series, ending the Typhoons’ title hopes, and giving their own a timely boost.
With net run rate likely to come in to play should the Dragons win their final game, coach Rob O’Connor will be very pleased with the margin of victory, his side coming out on top by 96 runs, putting pressure on the Scorchers who they face in a crucial match on July 26th.

Batting first the Dragons lost Shauna Kavanagh (7) early in the innings, but Cecelia Joyce (39) and Mary Waldron added almost a hundred before Joyce was caught by Kate McKenna from the bowling of Sash Maloney.

Maloney (5-50) struck again in her next over to remove the impressive Waldron (51) LBW, before a disastrous run out saw Gaby Lewis depart for just 4 to leave the Dragons 126-4.

Laura Delany (37) and Rachel Delaney (47 not out) then combined after the loss of another wicket to ensure the scoring rate was maintained and the pair helped push the score to 266-9 at the end of 50 overs.

Maloney, with her five wickets was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers, with the remaining wickets spread between Lucy Small (1-34), Amy Kenealy (1-41) and Vanessa Kaleda (1-19). The one major downside for the Typhoons was the loss of debutant Laura Boylan to injury after just two overs.

Sash Maloney’s day continued to go well as she opened the batting with Clare Shillinton (11), but she was eventually run out for 21, ending any hopes of a five-wicket and 50-run combination on the day.

Lucy Small (27) and Amy Kenealy (26) almost reached a 50-partnership, but once the pair fell in quick succession it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Typhoons, especially with the Dragons attack putting in such a strong team performance.

Laura Delany and Cecelia Joyce ended up wicket-less after economical spells, but the six other bowlers took advantage of the pressure those two created and picked up wickets, with Gaby Lewis the pick of the bunch with 2-21.

In the end Laura Boylan was unavailable to bat due to her earlier injury, meaning the Typhoons were all out after just 9 wickets for 170, 96 runs short of the large target set by the Dragons.
