Kim Garth has been named as Ireland captain for this weekend’s ECB Twenty20 in the absence of the injured Isobel Joyce.

Joyce picked up a knee injury when the side faced Devon in the County Championship and will miss out on the T20 fixtures against Somerset and Surrey on Sunday July 5th in the hope of recovering for the County Championships tie with Durham on July 19th.

After a string of strong performances as captain of the Scorchers, it was felt that Garth should be given the opportunity to lead the senior squad in the absence of Joyce. Under her leadership the Scorchers have lost just one game this season, and Garth has shown the ability to lead confidently without her own performances being affected.

Ciara Metcalfe has earned a recall to the senior team for the first time since 2011. The leg spinner, who has 50 ODI wickets for Ireland, has been training with the senior performance squad in recent weeks and has worked hard towards a return to the national side showing commitment and enthusiasm to training whilst performing well for the Dragons in the Super 3’s series.

Hannah de Burgh Whyte also comes into the side after strong performances in recent club and Super 3’s matches for the Scorchers. She is joined by Amy Kenealy, who returns to the side for the first time since May.

Lucy O’Reilly will not travel as part of planned workload management due to the amount of cricket the young fast bowler has, and is due to play over the summer.

The squad will travel to Bath Cricket Club to face both Somerset and Surrey as part of the ECB T20 Division One competition. Both games will take place on Sunday July 5th and you can keep up to date with all the action through cricketireland.ie and the @irishwomenscric twitter account.
