Happy New Year From Jack Tector

Jack Tector is spending his winter with Randwick-Petersham in Sydney, Australia. In his second diary entry, he describes how he spent his Christmas in the company of friends and ticked the Boxing Day Test match off his bucket-list. Jack also wishes his brother Harry, coach Ryan Eagleson and the whole Under 19 squad luck ahead of the World Cup which begins next week.
“Hello again from Sydney, with special thanks to all of you loyal enough to stick around for part 2.

On the pitch the Randy Petes have been flying high, with some really strong performances from the 1s being supported by a positive change in fortune for the 2s. However, not everything has been rosy as just two weeks before Christmas our U21s lost to a very strong Manly side, featuring a few Australian U19 players. I made 25 myself as we were bowled out for 100.

But it was the Randy Petes with the last laugh, as the following weekend our 1s, 2s and 3s all registered convincing wins against the very same Manly. I’m pleased to have registered 71 myself in an opening stand of 150 with the very impressive Matty Everett (93*), as we set about chasing down 194 with 8 wickets in hand.

Putting back on my social cap, I managed a catch-up with Theo Lawson before Christmas who was up visiting Kim Garth. Kim, who is playing for the Sydney Sixers in the Woman’s Big Bash League, has bowled really well for them, and it’s always great to see the Irish representing on such a big stage. It was also great to see Dan Sams, who plays for the Randy Petes take a 4-fer for the Sixers last night in the opening BBL game.

Our final game before the Christmas break was against Bankstown, taking place out west where it got up to 40 degrees. We managed to get another win, I made 20 on our way to chasing 160 odd.

Parky (James Parkinson) was in Sydney visiting family so it was great to meet up with another YM-er. The way things are going, ‘Sandymount’ will be a valid ethnicity on next year’s Australian census.

Myself and Paddy headed down to Adelaide for a couple of days for a BBL game at the Adelaide Oval. Other notable events taking place in Adelaide during the time are the myriad religious ceremonies in the South Australian capital’s 25,000-odd churches. We caught up with James McCollum who, as I’m sure you know, is spending his winter down there. From there we went to Melbourne for a week or so for the bucket-list Boxing Day test match. We had tickets to days 1 & 2 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We stayed with fellow YM-er Oliver Gunning. Gunners has been very generous and welcomed us into his family home for the Christmas period, and we were in safe hands. There was also another Irish get-together with Eoghan Delany and Tyrone Kane both spending their winters in the Victorian capital (for pricings on mentions in next month’s blog contact jack@sales.com.au).

Finally, can I wish all the best to the 19s, Pete & Eagy at the World Cup in New Zealand. It will be an amazing experience for the boys and here’s hoping they can cause a few upsets. I’m looking forward to catching up with the lads and watching a few of their games in mid-January in Christchurch.

Thanks for reading and tune in next time for stories from Melbourne, and of course all things Randy Petes.”
