Ireland were left to settle for a draw in the truncated ICC Intercontinental Cup games at Leinster Cricket Club in Rathmines. Ireland’s batsmen, led by a 119 run partnership between Andrew White and Gary Wilson, gave the bowlers a lead of 167 to play with after the first innings. Afghanistan batted much more watchfully however in their second innings and a very good opening partnership of 106 between their captain Sadiq and their vice-captain Ahmedi was enough to secure them a draw despite an afternoon session of middle order wobbles that saw them collapse to 185 for 7 at one point.

Three debut wickets for Stuart Thompson and another quick spell of bowling from Max Sorensen was the highlight for Ireland in field and they will be cursing two crucial dropped catches that cost them a chance at victory.

So it’s 13 points for Ireland and 7 for Afghanistan but they could have easily pushed on for the outright win inside two days with a little more luck and the full 20 points. Ireland remain top of the table however and on course for the Intercontinental Cup Final.

Captain Kevin O’Brien was left frustrated saying ‘It was a little bit disappointing not to push home for the full win but we weren’t too far away in the end, they batted a lot better than they did in the first innings and the wicket flattened out a lot compared to yesterday’.

It’s on to Bangladesh next week for Ireland who they will play in a three match T20 series in Stormont on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
