Mark Donegan Plays 1st League Match

Mark’s league season for Kamo Cricket Club got underway this week as his preparations for the U19 ICC World Cup continued
Last week was my first league match with Kamo Cricket Club, and we won by 7 wickets which was a great way to start the season.

I scored 45 as we chased down 190 and I had three dismissals behind the stumps.
Kamo is a really tight knit club and the practice facilities are really great. There are teams in the Premier and Reserve grade in the Northland Cricket Association Senior Club Competitions. Our coach/captain is New Zealand Cricket Level 2 qualified Coach Ben Hyde. He’s really good and played in England during the summer.

I was selected to play for Northland 2nds on Sunday. That’s the regional team we are training with. Unfortunately we were beaten by Counties Manakau in a similar scoring match to the day before. I didn’t keep in the Northland match but I did score 30 runs, even if it was in a losing cause.

I continue to coach most days whether that’s in the schools or with the club. When I travel to different schools, it’s all about introducing the basics of cricket to the young kids. The club has a strong relationship with the local primary schools and this makes sure there’s good numbers coming through.

However, with the club they are that bit more advanced so I am trying to bring them along further and develop their skills. The club does encourage players of any level of competency to come along and enjoy the game though.

I’ve even been introduced to the joys of manual labour at the Cobham Oval. I’m down there once a week, power hosing or cleaning out the sheds or whatever job they want me to do.
