Review of Ireland Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Sri Lanka

Ireland reached the Super Sixes Stage of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers out in Sri Lanka this month. Kim Garth was the highest run scorer with 137 runs, while Isobel Joyce took 6 wickets throughout the tournament for Ireland.

Group A:Ireland vs. Zimbabwe

The Irish team made the perfect start to the competition, beating Zimbabwe by 119 runs. Ireland Kim Garth top scored for the Irish with 63, supported by captain Laura Delany, who made 47, with Clare Shillington hit 30(24) as her and Garth added 52 in just 34 balls, to post 237 for 6 for Ireland.

Amy Kenealy celebrated her 50th cap by taking two early wickets as Ireland had a great start to the Zimbabwe innings. Garth continued her all round display by taking 3-24, with Ciara Metcalfe taking 3-38 while Robyn Lewis the other wicket taker (2-7) to help Ireland win by 119 runs.

Ireland 237/6 (50 overs; K Garth 63, L Delany 47, C Shillington 30, C Joyce 26, J Nkomo 2-46, N Mutasa 2-53).

Zimbabwe 118 all out (37.5 overs; A Noiraya 35, L Tshuma 25, M Musonda 20, K Garth 3-24, C Metcalfe 3-38, R Lewis 2-7, A Kenealy 2-19).

Ireland Women won by 119 runs.

Sri Lanka vs. Ireland

In the second game of Group A for Ireland they lost to Sri Lanka by 146 runs. Sri Lanka batted first, and half centuries from Prasadani Weerakkody (61) and Dilani Mandari (53) saw Sri Lanka score 239/8. Isobel Joyce claimed 4-39 with Gaby Lewis supported the former Irish captain with 2-41). During the Sri Lankan innings, Meg Kendal picked up a hamstring injury and wasn’t able to bat. Clare Shillington hit six boundaries in an unbeaten 36 (37) with Left-arm seamer Fernando took 3-21 as Ireland were out for 93.

SrI Lanka 239/8 (50 overs; P Weerakkody 61, D Mandara 53, I Joyce 4-39, G Lewis 2-41).

Ireland 93 all out (36.1 overs; C Shillington 36*. I Fernando 3-21).

Sri Lanka won by 146 runs

Ireland vs. India

An opening stand of 174 between centurion Thirush Kamani and Deepta Sharma as India finished on 250 for 2. Kamani made her second ODI hundred (113*) while Sharma made 89, with Kim Garth (1-38) and Isobel Joyce (1-39) were the pick of the Irish attack.

Gaby Lewis was to be the star of the Irish innings to top score with 33 as Ireland were all out for 125. Skipper Laura Delany (21) and Isobel Joyce (31) supported Lewis in the Irish innings. Poonam Yadav took 3-30

India 250/2 (50 overs. T Kamani 113*, D Sharma 89).

Ireland 125 all out (49.1 overs, G Lewis 33, I Joyce 31, L Delany 21, P Yadav 3-30).

India win by 125 runs.

Ireland vs. Thailand

Ireland scored 218 for 7 based around a 3rd wicket partnership of 106 between Kim Garth (98) and skipper Laura Delany (50). Garth’s 98 came from 122 balls (9 fours, 1 six) before she was run out just short of her century

Amy Kenealy (2-12) struck twice early in the Thailand reply, but solid batting from Narraya Boochatham (44) and captain Sornnarin Tippoch (42) kept Thailand in the contest. However Lucy O’Reilly took 3 for 28 with Ciara Metcalfe’s taking 2 for 25 which helped Ireland win by 46 runs.

As a result of this game, Ireland went through to the Super Sixes, as well as Ireland retained their ODI status for the next four years.

Ireland 218-7 in 50 overs (Kim Garth 98, Laura Delany 50, Ratanaporn Padunglerd 2-25, Suleeporn Laomi 2-56).

Thailand 172-9 in 50 overs (Nattaya Boochatham 44, Sornnarin Tippoch 42, Lucy O’Reilly 3-28, Ciara Metcalfe 2-25, Amy Kenealy 2-12).

Ireland beat Thailand by 46 runs.

Super Sixes: Ireland vs. Bangladesh.

Ireland faced Bangladesh in their first game in the Super Sixes stage of the tournament. Clare Shillington hit four boundaries with two maximums in top scoring with 37 (36). She shared a third wicket partnership of 45 with Meg Kendal (16), who returned from her hamstring injury. Laura Delany, who also made 37, along with Isobel Joyce (24) to rebuild the innings with a partnership of 44 with Shillington and Kendal falling in quick succession. Ireland were 144 all out in the 48th Over. Jahanara Alam (3-21), Panna Ghosh (2-16) and Khadija Tul Kubra (2-26) were the pick of the bowlersfor Bangladesh.

Sharmin Akhter top scored for Bangladesh with 52 from 86 balls. Although Akhter (52) was dismissed by Ciara Metcalfe (1-33), Morgana Hoque (34*) along with Rumana Ahmed (24*) steered their side safely home. Gaby Lewis (1-31) dismissed Sultana, and when Isobel Joyce ran out Islam for 2, Ireland was back in the contest to leave Bangladesh initially at 52 for 2.

Ireland – 144 all out (47.1 overs; C Shillington 37, L Delany 37, I Joyce 24, Alam 3-21, Ghosh 2-16, Kubra 2-26).

Bangladesh – 145/3 (39.1 overs; S Akhter 52, F Hoque 34*, R Ahmed 24*, S Sultana 22).

Bangladesh won by seven wickets.

Ireland vs. Pakistan

Ireland Women lost to Pakistan in their third Super Sixes clash by 86 runs loss. Pakistan batted first and scored 271 for 5, with Javeria Khan making unbeaten 90 came from 104 while Nahida Khan hit 72 in just 76 balls (10 fours). Gaby Lewis (2-62) was the most successful of the Irish bowlers, while Amy Kenealy (1-23), Isobel Joyce (1-33) and Lucy O’Reilly (1-35) were the other successful bowlers.

A second wicket stand of 74 between top scorer Cecelia Joyce (41) and Kim Garth (33) gave the Irish a solid platform, but Ireland lost wickets in bundles. Isobel Joyce battled bravely with a defiant 33, but a brace of wickets for Sandhu (2-25), Mir (2-32) and Yousuf (2-45) saw Ireland all out for 185.

Pakistan 271-5 (50 overs; Javeria Khan 90*, Nahida Khan 72, Nain Abidi 44, G Lewis 2-62).

Ireland 185 all out (48.5 overs; C Joyce 41, I Joyce 30, K Garth 33, N Sandhu 2-25, S Mir 2-32, S Yousuf 2-45).

Pakistan won by 86 runs.

Ireland vs. South Africa

Ireland lost their final Super Six match against South Africa by 36 runs (D/L) in a rain-affected match in Colombo. The Irish scored 166 with Mary Waldron top scoring 33 not out. Isobel Joyce (30), Cecelia Joyce (29) and Gaby Lewis (21) were the pick of the other Irish with the bat. Lizelle Lee (2-12), Sune Luus (2-34) and Dane van Niekerk (2-45) all picked up wickets for South Africa.

Kim Garth (1-35) dismissed Lee early in the South African innings, but Laura Wolvaardt (32*) and Mignon Du Preez (29*) took their side to 82 for 1. The game has to be stopped due to rain and thunder, and in the end brought the game to a premature end with South Africa ahead on Duckworth/Lewis.

After the game Clare Shillington confirmed her retirement for Ireland the 50-over format, but stated that she will continue to play T20 cricket.

Ireland – 166 all out (49.5 overs; M Waldron 33*, I Joyce 30, C Joyce 29, G Lewis 21, L Lee 2-12, S Luus 2-34, D van Niekerk 2-45).

South Africa 82-1 (21 overs, L Wolvaardt 32*, M Du Preez 29*).

South Africa beat Ireland by 36 runs (D/L method).
