On an action packed day of Toyota Super 3 cricket at Oak Hill, the Scorchers extended their lead at the to of the table.
The Scorchers extended their lead at the top of the Toyota Super 3 table after wins in both of their T20 games against the Dragons and Typhoons at Oak Hill on Sunday.
Katie Gurrey’s half century was key to the Scorchers six-wicket win in the morning game, as the New Zealand overseas player struck 6 fours and cleared the ropes twice in her 55 from 47 balls. She shared an opening stand of 57 with Rebecca Stokell (25) as they chased down their 114 target with two overs to spare.

Hannah Little bowled well to take 3 for 28, but Gurrey ensured the Scorchers were always in control.

The Dragons total of 113 was based around a 5th wicket stand of 66 between Amy Hunter and Katelyn Fryett (20). Instonians youngster Hunter is regarded as something of a prodigy, and she showed why with a wide array of attacking strokes, hitting 3 fours and a six in her unbeaten 42 from 40 balls.

The Dragons didn’t help their cause with no fewer than four run-outs in their innings.

Hunter top-scored again in the afternoon match, but once more the Dragons lost in a low-scoring encounter against the Typhoons. Her 22 coupled with 20 from Irish international Gaby Lewis saw their team make what looked a modest 94 for 7 – two wickets apiece for North Down spinner Natasha Morton (2-9) and Eimear Richardson (2-14).

Hannah Little (2-23) removed internationals Clare Shillington and Sophie MacMahon early, but with Laura Delany and Richardson well set, the chase loooked a formality as the Typhoons reached 67 for 3.

However, inspired by Aoife Brennan (4-9), the Dragons fought back taking 5 wickets for just 7 runs to leave the game in the balance at 74 for 8. Irish skipper Delany held her nerve to guide her team home in company with Eimear Mullen. Delany hit 6 fours in her unbeaten 45 from just 38 balls to seal the two-wicket win.

The final game of the day was the most dramatic, with the Scorchers edging out the Typhoons by four runs – the award of six penalty runs to the Scorchers due to the Typhoons’ slow over rate proving crucial in the final analysis.

Rebecca Stokell was again amongst the runs as she top scored with 56 from 45 deliveries (8 fours) as she and skipper Kim Garth (47) added 81 for the second wicket as the Scorchers posted 160 for 4.

Clare Shillington thumped 8 fours and a six in a rapid 52 from just 26 balls to get the Typhoons chase up and running. Her dismissal by Hannah De Burgh Whyte saw the Typhoons wobble losing three wickets for five – Kim Garth taking two in an over.

Laura Delany (54*) and Amy Kenealy (26*) added an unbroken 61 for the 5th wicket but it wasn’t enough as they finished four agonising runs short on 156 for 4.

These games were supposed to be the final games of the series, but Cricket Ireland are trying to facilitate the rearranging of four matches postponed earlier in the competition.
