Alex Richard Cusack

Alex was born outside Ireland but of Irish parentage and therefore came to Ireland as the holder of an Irish passport. As such he quickly became eligible to represent Ireland and made his debut against Middlesex in June 2007 at what, as a Clontarf player, had become his home ground of Castle Avenue.

Cusack also made a successful first class debut in August 2007, scoring 130 against Scotland in Belfast. The match saw a brilliant partnership between Cusack and Andre Botha for the sixth wicket which set a record for Ireland. It broke the team’s previous highest sixth wicket partnership record which was established in 1896.

In 2009 he became one of the first holders of a professional Cricket Ireland contract alongside Trent Johnston. Then, at the ICC World T20 in England, in which Ireland progressed to the super eights stage, Cusack almost helped his team to victory over Sri Lanka by taking 4/18 at Lord’s. His bowling figures were the best for Ireland in T20 International’s and he was nominated for this performance at the annual awards.

Cusack is another of those who has represented Ireland over 100 times, with 131 caps to his credit as of the end of the ICC World Twenty20.

Cusack’s most important performance was surely against England at the 2011 Cricket World Cup, as he played the perfect foil to Kevin O’Brien in a most remarkable partnership of 162 runs in just 17 overs. Kevin’s innings may have deservedly won the plaudits but Alex’s 47 was just as vital.

To date Alex has scored 2,190 runs with one century, 130 against Scotland in 2007. On the bowling front he has taken 130 wickets with one five wickets in an innings haul, 5-20 against Afghanistan in 2010. If that was not enough he has also taken 50 catches.
