David Trent Johnston

Trent has been a marvellous contributor to Irish Cricket. He first appeared in Ireland as an overseas professional for a number of clubs and following his marriage to Vanessa, an Irish girl, he came to live permanently in the country and subsequently obtained an Ireland passport. During his time in Australia he played five First Class matches for New South Wales.

Trent made his debut for Ireland against Surrey in 2004 at Castle Avenue. Since then, up to the conclusion of the tournament from which Ireland qualified for the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, he has played 177 matches for Ireland scoring 2,347 runs, taking 248 wickets and taking 71 catches.

As to outstanding performances, in batting Trent’s highest score is 83 against Denmark in Utrecht in 2004. As a bowler he has taken 5 wickets in an innings on 4 occasions, the best of which in statistical terms was his 6-23 against Namibia in 2006 at Castle Avenue. He is also one of the very few Ireland players to take a hat trick, which he did against Gloucestershire at Castle Avenue in 2007.

Apart from his personal performances, Trent has also been an outstanding captain for Ireland, leading them on 60 occasions before passing the baton over to William Porterfield. He was captain in Ireland’s first ever appearance in a World Cup in 2007, where he led them to victories over two Test Playing nations, Pakistan (on St. Patrick’s Day) at Sabina Park, Kingston and Bangladesh at Kensington Oval, Barbados, as well as a tie against a third Test Playing Nation, Zimbabwe, also at Sabina Park, Kingston.

Trent currently represents YMCA in Sandymount, for whom he is also coach.
