Ireland Women power to 9-wicket victory, set a new partnership record for second time in three days
DEVENTER, Holland - Ireland Women’s cricket team has powered to a 9-wicket victory over Scotland in their last T20 International of the current series in Holland, and in the process set a new partnership record that was only set two days ago.
After losing the toss, Ireland found themselves in the field on a pitch that appeared far more batter-friendly than yesterday. To prove the point, the Scots got off to a flyer and led by captain Sarah Bryce they had registered 56-0 in only the 8th over.
However, the first wicket signalled a turning of the tide, when Ireland captain Laura Delany struck with the ball by removing Scottish opener Lorna Jack LBW for 17.
The Scots then found scoring more difficult, and with a clever rotation of bowlers, regular wickets began to fall. Led by a series of breakthroughs by Lara Maritz (3-4 from 3 overs) – which included being on a hat-trick at one point - the Scots lost 5-14 and looked to be squandering their positive start.
A late flurry of runs in the last three overs got the Scottish side to a reasonably competitive total of 126-7, a total they could defend but 30 to 40 runs below what they were hoping for after their start.
The Irish response was positive, rapid and relentless. While Rebecca Stokell fell for 10 in the third over, Gaby Lewis (65* off 39 balls) an Kim Garth (47* off 33 balls) hit out. The pair put on an unbeaten 113 runs for the second wicket, which is a new record partnership in T20I cricket for Ireland Women, bettering the 112-run previous record set only on Monday, which also involved Lewis.
Impressively the 113-run stand was from just 65 balls and involved 17 boundaries struck between the pair.
The winning runs, a four to deep mid-wicket, was struck by Garth off the first ball of the 14th over and gave Ireland a nine-wicket win with 41 balls to spare.
As a further positive for Ed Joyce’s squad to take from recent matches is that the now three highest partnerships in T20 Internationals for any wicket for Ireland Women have been set in the last three months (see), showing signs of great progress within the batting unit.
The squad now returns to Ireland and will prepare for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament that starts on 31 August 2019. The schedule for the Qualifier was recently released, and Ireland will face Namibia, Netherlands and Thailand in the group stage.
