The Universe Boss is Landing in Belfast
The self-proclaimed Universe Boss, otherwise known as Chris Gayle, has been named in the West Indies squad for their upcoming one-day international against Ireland at Stormont on September 13th.
Gayle has been in a long-running dispute with Cricket West Indies but Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne, has said both Gayle and, the similarly recalled, Marlon Samuels will both “add value to our batting and help with the nurturing of the young batsmen in the team.”
The West Indies batsmen struggled in the 1st Test against England last weekend but they are the current World T20 Champions. They have a reputation for finding the boundary and playing an entertaining brand of cricket. Adding Chris Gayle into the mix will only add to the excitement for Irish cricket fans and the Irish bowlers looking to nab his wicket.
In the 2011 World Cup in Mohali, Gayle didn’t play against Ireland but Kieron Pollard smashed the Windies to victory and in 2014 his teammates once again got after Ireland’s bowlers to win with over 13 overs to spare.
In 2015, however, Ireland defeated the West Indies with George Dockrell picking up the crucial wicket of Gayle. Dockrell recently described that wicket as “the biggest in my career on one of the best days I’ve had in an Ireland shirt.”
For every player there are plans in place and for Gayle, on that day, the plan was to tie him down with dot balls by executing accurate deliveries. Eventually it paid off and Gayle went for 36 off 65 balls.
The West Indies will not be a one man team when they visit Stormont in September but the opportunity to see Chris Gayle play on Irish soil does not happen often and, at 37 years of age, this could well be the last time he visits these shores.
Don’t miss out on your opportunity to see the Universe Boss and his West Indies’ teammates take on William Porterfield and your Irish heroes live at Stormont this September 13th!
