Wolves – Day Three Report

Back
Back

Ireland Wolves needed just 13 overs to claim the final four Bangladesh A wickets on the third morning of their first-class match in Sylhet, with the hosts only able to add 15 runs to their overnight score.
George Dockrell took two wickets for just two runs in the morning, getting Ireland Wolves off to the perfect start with a simple caught and bowled to dismiss Nurul Hasan ( ) in the fourth over of the day.

It took Ireland six more overs to make another breakthrough, Jack Tector with a smart piece of fielding to run out Sanzamul for –, but that piece of work saw the momentum swing towards the Wolves, with the final two wickets coming in the next ten balls.

Tector and James Shannon opened up for the Wolves with a deficit of 82 runs, but by lunch Ireland had lost two wickets, with Tector (9) and Balbirnie (5) the men to fall.

After lunch Sean Terry made a positive start before falling to Sanzamul, with Simi Singh unable to repeat his first innings heroics falling to Zubair Hossain shortly after for 12. Both were out LBW.

Stuart Thompson and Shannon then took control of the game and built an excellent 56 run partnership in the middle session, before they both fell in quick succession shortly before tea.

Thompson fell first after getting underneath the ball and hitting one straight up, with Shannon given LBW shortly after leaving Ireland in a dangerous position heading into tea.

Stuart Poynter was hit in the helmet by a throw when taking a quick single, and although he was unhurt, found himself heading back to the pavilion a few minutes later when he was given out LBW off the bowling of Sanzamul.

The spinner, who made his ODI debut against Ireland earlier this year, was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers finishing the day with 5-90, and picked up his fourth wicket of the innings immediately after when he edged his first ball to wicket keeper Nurul Hasan.

At this stage Ireland’s lead was just shy of 100 with Andrew McBrine and Shane Getkate at the crease, the pair battled to put together a partnership but the Bangladeshi spin attack proved too strong as Getkate fell for 26 ten overs later, before McBrine became Sanzamul’s fifth victim to leave Ireland 213 all out.

Before the end of the day, Bangladesh A returned to the wicket, however, they are down two already thanks to a McBrine brace.

Wolves Captain, Andrew Balbirnie was hopefully for the final day: ‘It was great to get four wickets this morning quickly after working hard throughout the day yesterday. Was brilliant to see James Shannon in the runs and the way he played on very tricky second day pitch was superb and guided us to a lead we can defend. Great boost going into the final day to get them two down early this evening as we hunt for the win tomorrow.”
