Barry McCarthy to return home, Peter Chase to join Ireland Wolves as replacement

COLOMBO – Cricket Ireland has confirmed that Barry McCarthy will return home to Dublin immediately after sustaining an injury during the warm-up match on the current Ireland Wolves tour of Sri Lanka, while 25-year old Peter Chase will fly out to join the squad as his replacement.
Pete Johnston, Head Coach of Ireland Wolves, said:

“Barry had surgery around four months ago for a fracture in his foot which required surgery. He had been working closely with Rob Cassell and Mark Rausa in the build-up to this tour and was tracking well with his bowling loads and making good progress, thus proving his fitness for this tour.”

“Unfortunately, during the first warm-up game here in Sri Lanka, Barry bowled a delivery which caused him to land awkwardly on the foot around the area of the previous fracture. Although our medical staff do not suspect a repeat of his previous injury, he is currently unable to bowl pain-free due to bruising around the area. Given the previous injury and following a thorough review, we have decided that it is in Barry’s best interests for him to return home and undertake assessment, review and rehab from Mark Rausa (Cricket Ireland’s Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services) and his foot surgeon.”

“Barry will be a big loss to the Wolves, not only with ball and bat, but he has proven himself to be an excellent leader amongst the group and has driven high standards – even through the disappointment of his recent injury set back. He can be proud of his attitude and work ethic on this tour and we wish him all the best with his rehab and hopefully swift recovery.”

The selectors have decided to call-up 25-year old paceman Peter Chase as replacement for McCarthy for the remainder of the tour.

Andrew White, Chair of National Men’s Selectors, said:

“We see Peter as an ideal replacement for Barry on this tour. Although Peter has played a number of internationals of late, he is still inexperienced in subcontinent conditions, so we see this as a great opportunity for Peter to lead a relatively inexperienced attack in foreign conditions. We wish him well as he flies out to join the squad.”

The Wolves squad will shortly head to Hambantota for the second four-day match against Sri Lanka A starting on Sunday.

The Ireland Wolves team was created in 2017 to bridge the gap between domestic first class and international cricket. The squad recently completed an eight-match series against Bangladesh A in Ireland, which followed on from a tour to Bangladesh made by the Wolves in 2017.
