BREADY – Leinster Lightning took command of Test Triangle Inter-Provincial Championship game against the North West Warriors today, after a washout on Day One of this three-day encounter.
After there was no play available on Day One of this fixture due to rain, there was again a delayed start today due primarily to a wet outfield. The match eventually saw first action at 2pm. Leinster Lightning won the toss and, possibly without surprise, inserted the home side.

After a very watchful start from the opening batsmen, it was Peter Chase who struck first when clean bowling Brendan Louw for 7. Despite William Porterfield hitting some trademark cover drives on his way to 25, he too fell victim to Chase in the same mode of dismissal. Despite Aaron Gillespie and Stuart Thompson taking the Warriors to 70-2, the Warriors suffered a collapse of sorts soon after.

Firstly, Thompson was trapped in front by Kevin O’Brien for 12, before David Rankin steered George Dockrell to Andy Balbirnie at slip. When Gillespie fell soon after when being clean bowled by the returning Tyrone Kane, the North West had slipped to 85-5. With Kane in full swing and Simi Singh coming into the attack, the Warriors came under further scrutiny. Kane struck to get the big wicket of McBrine LBW and Singh got his first wicket by dismissing the dangerous Graham Hume.

95-7 soon became 106-9 as Craig Young and Boyd Rankin fell, leaving Dave Scanlon a tough task coming in at number 11 to join Graham Kennedy. However, the former hit a few lusty blows before being trapped in front by Singh for an entertaining 21, helping the North West Warriors to scramble to 135 in 59.3 overs.

Leinster Lightning then had a tricky 13-over period to negotiate before the close of play. Jack Tector started positively and looked to be in good nick before Craig Young snuck one through his defences for 15. Cormac McLoughlin-Gavin and Andrew Balbirnie stuck in for the rest of the period, still looking to bat with intent when they could. They finished on 18* and 15* respectively as the Lightning made it to 49-1 at the close of play.
