Gut-wrenching loss for Ireland Wolves in second ODM

CHATTOGRAM, Bangladesh – Ireland Wolves were defeated on the second last ball of today’s one-day match by Bangladesh Emerging XI – a gut-wrenching result given the visitors held the upper hand throughout key periods of the run chase.
Mammudul Hasan Joy and Shamim Hossain led the way for the hosts, scoring 66 and 53 not out respectively as Bangladesh Emerging XI chased the target of 264 with two balls to spare at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Ben White was the pick of the Ireland Wolves bowlers with figures of 2-45. There was also a wicket each for Ruhan Pretorius, Josh Little and Shane Getkate.

Earlier in the day, Pretorius struck 90 off 125 balls for Ireland Wolves in an innings that included nine fours and a six. Fellow opener James McCollum (41), along with Stephen Doheny (37), Harry Tector (31) and Getkate (29), all made starts as Ireland Wolves posted 263 for 7 in their 50 overs.

After losing the toss, Tector would’ve been mightily pleased by the opening stand of 88 between Pretorius and McCollum. The pair were watchful and punished anything loose by the Bangladeshi bowlers.

Sumon Khan made the breakthrough for Bangladesh Emerging XI in the 21st over as McCollum edged through to wicketkeeper Akbar Ali.

Four overs later, Pretorius brought up his maiden half-century for Ireland Wolves, flicking the ball behind square-leg for a single to reach the landmark in 73 balls.

Pretorius and Doheny batted nicely together and combined to add 85 for the second wicket before the latter was caught by Shamim Hossain off the bowling of Raikbul Hasan.

The wicket of Doheny caused a wobble at the back-end of the innings. Pretorius fell four balls later as he was bowled by Raikbul 10 runs shy of a second List-A century. Ireland Wolves then lost a further four wickets in the remaining 12.1 overs and the batting effort was ended by Gareth Delany being run out off the last ball of the innings for 18.

The next match in the five-match series will take place in Chattogram on Tuesday. You’ll be able to follow the action via a live stream on YouTube, regular updates on social media or through the Wolves hub on the Cricket Ireland Website.
