Magherafelt Super 8’s a Big Success

A successful Super 8’s competition in Magherafelt has paved the way for new junior cricket coaching in local schools.
Whilst most players get a break over the winter, Cricket Ireland’s development coaches are still working hard to promote the game and increase participation. A key part of this is working in partnership with schools to introduce children to the game.

During October, three Cricket Ireland coaches ventured to Meadowbank Sports Arena to help run a Super 8’s competition for Magherafelt High School and St. Pius X College. The event was jointly organised between Geoffrey Burns, Head of PE at Magherafelt High School and Cricket Ireland.

There were 50 boys and girls attending, with all of them taking part in an hour of cricket skills coaching in the morning. The children were split into three groups and received coaching on batting, bowling and Super 8 match practice, rotating around the three different coaching stations every 20 minutes.

In the following two hours each of the six teams played three Super 8’s matches, with all of the children enjoying the games and having plenty of opportunity to use the skills they have learned in the morning.

On the event itself, Geoffrey Burns said “It was great to have the boys and girls from schools playing, learning and having fun together. We hope to repeat the event later in the year with the other schools in the town. The coaches were great with the kids, and it has fuelled their interest.”

The whole event was a great success and Cricket Ireland are determined to build upon these green shoots of growth to increase the opportunities for people to play cricket in the Magherafelt area.

As a result of the Super 8’s event, Geoffrey Burns has organised Cricket Practice Sessions at Magherafelt High School on Monday nights from 10th Nov – 15th Dec from 7-9pm for players from Under 13 upwards (everyone welcome), please contact Geoffrey at the school on +44 (0) 28 7963 2385 for more information.

The event was organised to help create more opportunities for girls to play cricket through the ICC Regional Support Programme to increase female participation in cricket throughout Northern Ireland, which has so far has enabled over 400+ women/girls to play cricket in Northern Ireland since May of this year.

Many thanks to Geoffrey Burns for helping to organise the event, Meadowbank Arena for hosting it and also thank you to the pupils from both schools for taking part. Finally thank you to the Senior Pupils from St. Pius X College, who helped out on the day as well.
