Mixed weekend for Ireland Women in County Champs

Ireland Women endured a mixed weekend in the ECB County Championship Division 2 after an emphatic victory on Sunday was followed up with a nail-biting loss on Monday.
Clare Shillington was the star of the show on Sunday as her rapid 62 off 44 balls guided Ireland to a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over Cheshire at Alvanley CC.

Rain in the early part of the day saw the game reduced to 26 overs a side, and when play did finally get underway the Irish bowlers stuck to their task well and kept the home-side’s run-rate in check. They were well backed up by an impressive display in the field which saw three run-outs as Cheshire totalled 109-4 off their allotted overs; those run outs coming from Kate McKenna, Isobel Joyce and Shauna Kavanagh.

Cheshire captain Jennifer Dunn top scored for her side with 45 before she was run out by McKenna, while Elena Tice finished with figures of 1-25 for Ireland.

Shillington and Emma Flanagan combined well to put on 49 for the first wicket became Cheshire first and only wicket, bowled by Sophie Ecclestone for 9. Rebecca Rolfe (29) then joined Shillington and together the pair saw Ireland home in the 21st over – Ireland’s second win in the competition.

Full Scorecard

Ireland were left to rue a poor batting performance on Monday as they lost out to Staffordshire by 3 wickets.

Having lost the toss Ireland were put in to bat and got off to a disastrous start as Flanagan was caught at gully in the 2nd over with just 4 runs on the board; the wickets continued to fall with regularity and after 6 overs Ireland were reeling at 16-5.

A quick-fire 26 from Mary Waldron added some impetus to Irish cause, while Kate McKenna (15) and Amy Kenealy (18) put up good resistance but the damage had already been done and Ireland were all out for 92.

Rain Delay

A brief rain delay did little to disrupt the Ireland attack.

A wicket for Elena Tice in the 2nd over of Staffs’ innings brightened Ireland’s spirits with the home-side 1-1 after 2.

Sunday’s hero with the bat Clare Shillington took a spectacular one-handed catch a slip off the bowling of McCarthy, and two more wickets for leg-spin of Tice, who finished with the impressive figures of 10-3-24-3, put Ireland right back in the game as Staffs’ were reduced to 47-4 in the 21st over.

Captain Joyce picked up another wicket before a brief rain break did little to break the Irish bowlers stride as Joyce picked up another soon after – stumped by Waldron – and McCarty also claimed a second to leave Staffs’ 61-7 and Ireland in with a real chance of grinding out a win.

But is was not to be Staffs’ crossed the winning line for the loss of 7.

Ireland continue their County Championship campaign on June 15th when they take on Wales.
