The Scorchers came out on top in the opening T20 day of the 2015 Super 3’s after a dramatic victory over the Typhoons ensured they maintained their unbeaten record.
Earlier in the day the Typhoons picked up their first win in the tournament when they beat the Dragons, who were also beaten by the Scorchers in the early morning game at Leinster CC.

Kim Garth was the star performer with the ball for the Scorchers, taking five wickets as they bowled out the Dragons for just 48 in the opening game of the day.

Rebecca Stockell picked up two wickets for the Dragons, but they proved nothing more than consolation as the Scorchers cruised to an eight wicket victory with plenty of time to spare.

The second game of the day saw the Typhoons, who were yet to win a match in the tournament after two defeats in the 50-over format, take on the Dragons who were still reeling from the heavy defeat in the morning.

Bowing first, the Dragons missed the bowling of in-form Katie Boylan at the start of the innings and Lucy Small got off to a flying start as the Typhoons posted an impressive 148.

It proved too many for the Dragons as wickets fell at regular intervals as they tried to keep up with the ever increasing run-rate.

The final game of the day, starting at 5pm looked like a may fall victim to the weather, but fortunately the rain held off to allow the most dramatic game of the day. Batting first the Scorchers posted 136-5 with a brilliant 40 from Robyn Lewis complimented by contributions from Isobel Joyce and Kim Garth.

Lucy Small was first to fall for the Typhoons, one of five run outs in the innings, but that did not help the Scorchers too much. Melissa Scott-Hayward and Sash Maloney looking in control as the Typhoons stayed ahead of the DLS par score as rain threatened once more.

Wet conditions made bowling and fielding difficult but the Scorchers managed to keep the required run rate at around seven-per-over for most of the innings. As wickets fell and boundaries hit, the momentum was swaying with each over. The introduction of Anna Kerrison, who’s first over went for just one run before she picked up the wicket of Sash Maloney gave momentum to the Scorchers, but it was not until four disastrous run-outs in the closing overs that the game was decided.

The Scorchers now sit top of the Super 3’s table with three wins from three, with the Dragons and Scorchers not far behind with one win each. The tournament continues with a second T20 day on Bank Holiday Monday (June 1st), with the three teams meeting again at Leinster CC.
