Sean Terry, the Southampton-born and Australian-raised top order batsman who made his debut for Ireland in 2016, has decided to call time on his international and domestic cricket career with immediate effect.
26-year old Terry has made six appearances for the Irish senior men’s side and is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm off break. He plays for The Hills Cricket Club and Leinster Lightning, having previously played for YMCA, Hampshire and Northamptonshire, and also represented Western Australia at under-19 level. He is the son of former England and Hampshire batsman Paul Terry.

Announcing his retirement, Terry said:

“It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to call time on my cricketing journey. Playing cricket for Ireland was undoubtedly the proudest moment of my life and something that I will always cherish. It is now time to start the next chapter of my life. Thanks to everyone at Cricket Ireland and Cricket Leinster for the opportunities and support they have given me”.

Richard Holdsworth, Performance Director at Cricket Ireland, said:

“Earlier this year Sean was included in our first round of full-time Inter-Provincial contracts – such was the esteem in which he was held by the selectors – so we were very sorry when Sean informed the Selectors and coaching staff of the decision to hang up his boots.”

“He was certainly part of our talent development pool and had already been capped in the white-ball game on six occasions. We identified Sean’s talents early and took every opportunity to integrate him into our player pathway programme as soon as he had declared for Ireland in 2016. We thought he had adapted well to the Irish set-up but, equally, we respect his decision, difficult as it must have been, and we wish him all the best with the next stage of his career outside of cricket.”

Albert van der Merwe, Head Coach of the Leinster Lightning, said:

“It is always an emotional day when any talented cricketer decides to calls time on a career as early as this. Sean has been a valued member of the Leinster Lightning team over recent years. His approach to training and preparation was professional and he was a much respected and liked player throughout his time in Leinster.”

“As a management group, we would like to thank Sean for his contribution to the success of Leinster Lightning in recent years. We respect Sean’s decision and he has the province’s full support and understanding. We wish him the best of success making the transition away from the professional game.”
