Cricket Ireland has today unveiled the Sunday Independent as the new title sponsor of the All-Ireland T20 Cup.
“The Sunday Independent has been a long-term supporter of Irish cricket, and we are delighted that we can extend this support into the peak club cricket T20 event on the Irish cricket calendar,” said Cormac Bourke, Editor of the Sunday Independent.

“Cricket is on the upswing in the Irish sporting landscape, and to be the place to go for the best Irish cricket coverage is an ambition we believe we have delivered on over many years.”

While a club-based competition, the Sunday Independent All-Ireland T20 Cup is an event overseen by Cricket Ireland and one that is important to growing the grassroots game across the island.

“No modern-day sport can create a vibrant and sustainable base without the support of its sponsors, and we are very fortunate to have the long-term and ongoing support of Cormac and his team at the Sunday Independent,” said Dennis Cousins, Commercial Director at Cricket Ireland.

“Their quality, expert journalism, combined with being the largest newspaper in circulation in Ireland, makes this a valuable partnership for our sport, and particularly when it is support at the grassroots level.”

Participation levels in the sport across Ireland has almost trebled in the last decade, moving it to what is reportedly the fourth-largest team participation sport in Ireland.

As the national governing body for the sport, Cricket Ireland has recognised in its Strategic Plan 2016-2020 that clubs are the hub of our sport and strengthening coaching standards and investing overtime in facilities is a priority.

Elaine Nolan, Participation Director at Cricket Ireland, said:

“We all understand that club cricket is the lifeblood of the game in Ireland, and that underscores the importance of this partnership.”

“While the role of supporting and sustaining club cricket belongs to our Provincial Unions, we recognize that volunteer time is finite, so Cricket Ireland has been providing the Unions with the opportunity, capacity and the resources to support the clubs. This support saw the appointment of full-time General Managers for each Provincial Union in 2017, and recently saw the further addition of administrative staff to support cricket operations across club and representative cricket.”

“These improvements help build the structures needed to sustain the grassroots game, and as such the Sunday Independent’s support enhances this by offering exposure to a national competition which will see each of the Provincial Unions T20 club champions pitted against each other to find the season’s top T20 club in Ireland.”

“I have no doubt it will be a thrilling competition and look forward to watching the top clubs fight it out at the finals in August.”
