Under-19s in convincing opening win over Jersey

The Ireland Under-19s Men’s team have started their ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier (Europe) campaign with a convincing 113-run victory over Jersey in The Hague today.
With temperatures tipped to hit the mid-30s today, Ireland captain Neil Rock won the toss and elected to bat first.

A wobbly start to the innings saw the Jersey side claim four Irish wickets with just 67 runs on the board, before Will Smale (66) and Tim Tector (26) steadied the ship and put on 58 for the fifth wicket in 12 overs. Smale (who plays King’s College Taunton and Croesyceiliog) hit nine boundaries, but the loss of both batters saw the Irish revival stutter at 148-6 with more than 16 overs still to bat.

Jonathan (JJ) Garth (31) and James Hunter (28) then put on a 59-run stand to take Ireland beyond 200, but the last 14 balls of the innings saw three wickets fall for 12 runs and the boys in green ended with 219-9 off 50 overs.

Seeking early wickets, Alex Neary stepped up and removed both openers, setting Jersey back on their heels at 13-2 in the 8th over. Neary would later claim a third wicket and end with the laudable figures of 3-13 off 7 overs.

Despite a 44-run third wicket stand for Jersey, the Ireland bowlers kept the pressure on and once they claimed the third scalp at 57, the floodgates opened. The last eight jersey wickets fell for just 49 runs, with left-arm YMCA spinner Jamie Forbes running through the middle order and claiming 5-19 from 7.1 overs.

The Jersey innings ended at 106 in the 35th over, giving Ireland a convincing victory to start its qualifying campaign. Forbes was awarded Player of the Match.
