DUBLIN – A Player of the Match half-century from Ireland’s Gaby Lewis saw Ireland register an unassailable 2-0 lead in the T20 International Challenge with a six-wicket win over Netherlands at Malahide today.
Lewis powered 52* from just 29 balls in an innings that featured an incredible 11 boundaries. Hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, Lewis looked her imperious best in bringing up her fifth career T20I half-century.

Twice out in the 40s during the Scotland series in May, Lewis looked determined to convert her innings today – today’s knock being as much about timing as power. This was best exemplified by the last shot of the match – which brought up her half-century as well – was an elegantly timed sweep shot off Freqerique Overdijk over square leg for four.

Lewis was ably supported by Rebecca Stokell (17) and Laura Delany (15), as the Irish side romped to the target of 110 in just 11.3 overs.

Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and electing to bat, the Netherlands lost a wicket second ball when Orla Prendergast knocked back Freqerique Overdijk’s off stump. Prendergast struck again in her two overs later to leave the Dutch side struggling at 16-2 in the fifth.

Two further wickets fell and the visitors were struggling to get any momentum at 51-4 in the 12th over. Enter Miranda Veringmeier and Juliet Post. The pair put on 58 for the fifth wicket in 51 balls, demonstrating Veringmeier’s power hitting and Post’s ability to turn the strike over. The pair showed great composure during their partnership – Veringmeier hitting two big sixes and 6 fours in her 60 from 50 balls. Her innings only coming to an end when caught of the last balls of the innings. Her knock followed a 33 from 15 balls in Game 1, as she once more counter-attacked with her side in early trouble.

Prendergast once more shone with the ball, finishing her 4 over spell with 2-14, and Sophie MacMahon also impressed with a disciplined line and length with 1-12 from 3 overs.

The two teams return to the same venue tomorrow for the last match, with Ireland leading the four-match series 2-0.
