World Cup Experience For Mark Donegan

Back

Mark Donegan played at the Ireland World Cup venue last weekend while the under 19 squad took advantage of the outdoor wickets in La Manga, Spain for training this week.
Just 72 days from now, the Ireland under 19s play their first match in the ICC U19 World Cup against Sri Lanka.

Before they know it Ireland’s young cricketers will be testing themselves against the best from around the world.
Sam Murphy and Mark Donegan are already in New Zealand preparing for the World Cup. They are both living in Whangarei getting used to the conditions. Last weekend Mark got very specific experience ahead of the World Cup.

All of Ireland’s group matches in the World Cup will be played at the Cobham Oval, Whangarei and Mark made his first appearance at the ground last Saturday.

“It was a really nice place to play and if we get the same result with Ireland I’ll be more than happy,” Mark said. “We made 250 in 40 overs and they got 170 in reply.”

Mark didn’t keep wicket in the match and scored 20 before being bowled. Going to New Zealand is all about building experience and what better experience could there be ahead of the World Cup than playing on the ground that Ireland will be based at during the group stages.

Meanwhile the rest of the Ireland under 19 squad have been in La Manga, Spain this week for an intensive camp as preparations continue apace for the World Cup.

There have been tough running sessions and skills sessions throughout the week as the players take advantage of the outdoor wickets and facilities.

With two birthdays this week, and two birthday cakes, it’s just as well there have been plenty of running and conditioning sessions to balance things out! Happy birthday to both Alex Stiles and Josh Little.
